FIT GT 2025 Carbon Project

Project Information:

FIT GT 2025 Carbon Project is a significant plantation forestry project located in the "Green Triangle" region, spanning the border of South Australia and Victoria. The project area is dispersed across the landscape, with key sites situated near Mount Gambier (SA) and Portland (VIC). Registered in February 2025, the project covers approximately 3,861 hectares.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Its primary activities involve establishing new plantation forests and converting existing short-rotation plantations (typically harvested for woodchips) into long-rotation plantations (harvested for sawlogs). By extending the growth period of the trees, the project increases the volume of carbon sequestered in the forest biomass and ensures that the carbon remains stored in long-lived wood products after harvest.

The Green Triangle is one of Australia's premier forestry regions, characterized by its high rainfall and fertile soils. The area features a mix of sandy loams, basalt-derived clays, and the region's famous limestone-based "Terra Rossa" soils, which are ideal for rapid tree growth. The land use in the surrounding region is heavily dominated by commercial timber production (Radiata Pine and Tasmanian Blue Gum), alongside grazing and dairy farming.

The proponent, The Trust Company (Australia) Limited as trustee for Forestry Investment Trust (FIT), is an investment vehicle historically associated with New Forests, a leading global manager of nature-based real assets. The "GT" in the project name references the Green Triangle. This project represents a strategic shift in the region's forestry management, moving towards higher-value, longer-rotation timber products that offer superior climate benefits compared to short-rotation pulpwood regimes.
