Ben Bullen and Vallyn Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Ben Bullen and Vallyn Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes regions of New South Wales. Registered in September 2025, the project covers approximately 1,737 hectares and is an aggregation of two distinct properties. The first property, "Vallyn," is located roughly 20km south of Warialda near Delungra, while the second area (corresponding to the "Ben Bullen" portion of the project title) is situated approximately 45km south of Inverell, near the town of Bundarra.

This project operates under the 2021 Soil Organic Carbon methodology, utilizing a hybrid approach of measurement and modelling to calculate carbon credits. The specific activity involves applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By optimizing nutrient levels, the project aims to increase plant growth and root biomass, which in turn sequesters more organic carbon into the soil profile. The proponent, Greg Hill, is a known grazier in the Delungra area, and the project is facilitated by Precision Pastures, an Armidale-based carbon service provider specializing in agronomy and soil health.

The environmental context for these properties varies slightly due to their locations. The "Vallyn" property near Delungra is situated in a region known for rich basalt and black earth soils, typically supporting mixed farming and cattle grazing with an annual rainfall of approximately 650mm-700mm. The Bundarra aggregation likely features granite or trap rock soils common to the southern Inverell Shire, which are well-suited for fine wool and beef production. Both areas are within summer-dominant rainfall zones, making the timing of nutrient application critical for maximizing soil carbon uptake.
