Kawatiri Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Kawatiri Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located roughly 2km north of the town of Gunning in the Southern Tablelands region of New South Wales. Registered in December 2024, the project covers approximately 81 hectares of agricultural land in an area traditionally known for fine wool production and cattle grazing. The project site sits within the Upper Lachlan Shire, about 60km north of Canberra and 50km west of Goulburn.
The region experiences a temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of around 630mm, supporting pasture growth suitable for livestock. The landscape is characterized by undulating hills with soils that typically range from granitic to sedimentary loams and clays. These soil types are generally responsive to carbon sequestration activities but often require careful management to improve organic matter levels.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method requires the proponent, Kawatiri No. 2 Pty Ltd (trustee for the Mumm Family Trust No. 2), to establish a baseline of soil carbon and then implement new management activities to increase it. Specific activities for this project involve re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures through seeding or pasture cropping, which aims to improve soil health and sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil profile. Climate Friendly Pty Ltd is listed as a participant, likely providing technical support and aggregation services.
