Project Information:

K2 - Revegetation Box Gum Grassy Woodland Riverina is an environmental planting project located at Munyabla on a working farm property named Koolawarra, approximately 13km west of Henty and 60km southwest of Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of NSW. It was registered in September 2024 and covers 30.94ha.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing permanent plantings of a mix of native tree and shrub species on land that was predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years. The standard requirements for these projects generally dictate planting native species at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover, typically meaning at least 200 stems per hectare, or enough to reach a 20% crown cover and a height of at least two meters at maturity.

The Henty and Munyabla area is predominantly known for traditional mixed farming, incorporating both dryland cropping and livestock grazing. The region experiences a temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 550mm. Local soils are predominantly Red Chromosols, which can often be sodic or magnesic, meaning they contain high levels of sodium that lead to clay dispersion and hardsetting.

This project was established with a distinct focus on ecological co-benefits alongside carbon sequestration. Supported by a NSW Government Living Carbon grant, the proponents are direct seeding over 8 Acacia species, Dodonaea, and eucalypt tubestock to restore the site to a native Box Gum Grassy Woodland ecosystem. To rigorously track these biodiversity improvements, the project is verified under the independent Accounting for Nature framework (Environmental Account ID: AU00089). Additionally, the landowner operates a concurrent soil carbon project ("Koolawarra 2 Soil Carbon Project") to remediate the farm's sodic soils by applying gypsum. This holistic approach demonstrates how permanent carbon plantings and soil health management can successfully integrate into a longstanding agricultural business.
