Mountain Coolibah

Project Information:

Mountain Coolibah is an environmental planting project located approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Toowoomba, near the town of Pittsworth in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. Registered in August 2024, the project covers 66.25 hectares of land previously used for agricultural purposes, specifically within a region heavily utilized for mixed cropping and cattle grazing.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This framework requires the establishment of permanent plantings of native tree species, such as the project's namesake Eucalyptus orgadophila (Mountain Coolibah), at densities sufficient to achieve forest cover. Standard requirements typically mandate a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare to ensure the trees reach a height of 2 meters and a crown cover of 20%, thereby generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) through carbon sequestration.

Environmentally, the Pittsworth and broader Darling Downs area is characterized by its fertile, self-mulching black cracking clays and basaltic soils, often found on the slopes and ridges where Mountain Coolibah trees naturally thrive. The region experiences a sub-humid climate with summer-dominant rainfall, averaging between 600mm and 700mm annually. These conditions are ideal for the specific native mix selected for this project, which is designed to be drought-tolerant and fire-resistant while providing habitat for local wildlife such as koalas and gliders.
