Griffith Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:
The Griffith Landfill Gas Project is a waste emissions reduction project located at the Tharbogang Waste Management Centre, approximately 8 kilometers northwest of the city of Griffith in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Registered on November 29, 2024, by LMS Energy Pty Ltd, the project involves the installation of a new landfill gas collection system at the Council-managed site.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This methodology credits the destruction of methane generated from decomposing organic waste. By installing a network of vertical wells and horizontal pipes, the proponent captures landfill gas, which is largely methane, and combusts it via a flare or electricity generator. This process converts methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower global warming potential. The project covers both "legacy" waste (deposited before the scheme's baselines) and "non-legacy" waste.
The surrounding Riverina region is a major agricultural hub, characterised by a mix of intensive irrigation and dryland farming. The area is famous for citrus, rice, and wine grape production, supported by the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. The local environment is classified as semi-arid to Mediterranean, typically receiving around 400mm of rainfall annually, with hot summers and cool winters. The soils in the region are predominantly red-brown earths and clay loams, which are highly productive when irrigated.
LMS Energy, the proponent, is a leading Australian bioenergy company that frequently partners with local councils to manage landfill gas. While the primary goal is emission reduction, these systems often enable future renewable electricity generation once gas flows are sufficient.
