JOCKWAR SOIL CARBON PROJECT
ERF196377
Project Information:
Jockwar Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at "Jockwar" station in Wellington East, South Australia. The project is situated on the shores of Lake Alexandrina, approximately 20km southwest of Tailem Bend and 100km southeast of Adelaide. Registered in February 2025, the project covers a registered area of 561.25 hectares.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for sequestering carbon in agricultural soils. To achieve this, the project proponent, Wellington Pastoral Co. Pty. Ltd., is implementing new management activities such as altering grazing intensity to improve vegetation cover, applying nutrients to address deficiencies, and introducing legumes into pasture systems. The project is supported by Elders Rural Services Australia Limited, a major agribusiness that provides carbon farming advisory services.
The Wellington East region forms part of the Murraylands and Lower Lakes district, characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool winters. Annual rainfall in the nearby town of Tailem Bend averages approximately 370mm. The landscape at Jockwar typically features sandy rises and loam over clay soils, common to the dune-swale systems of the region, and includes significant frontage to Lake Alexandrina.
Jockwar itself is a historic pastoral property established circa 1910 by the McFarlane family. It was operated as a sheep station for over a century before being sold in 2022. The property is renowned for its lakeside setting and has historically supported a mix of grazing (sheep and cattle) and horticulture.
