Radial Timber Australia Carbon 1
ERF195732
Project Information:
Radial Timber Australia Carbon 1 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 20km north of Yarram in the Gippsland region of Victoria. Registered in May 2025, the project covers 613 hectares near the locality of Giffard West. This region is a significant hub for Victoria’s forestry industry, interspersed with dairy farming and grazing properties.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it utilizes the "avoided conversion" activity. This means the project proponent has committed to re-establishing and maintaining a plantation forest on land that was previously a plantation, effectively preventing the land from being converted to non-forested uses such as pasture or cropland after harvest. By legally securing the land's future as a forest, the project ensures continued carbon sequestration in the growing trees.
Environmentally, the Giffard West and broader Wellington Shire region typically experience a temperate climate with moderate rainfall, generally averaging between 600mm and 800mm annually. The landscape is characterized by the Gippsland Plain bioregion, where soils are often classified as Sodosols or Kurosols (texture-contrast soils with sandy or loamy topsoils over clay subsoils). These conditions are well-suited for the native hardwood species often favored by Radial Timber, such as Silvertop Ash and Southern Mahogany.
Radial Timber Australia, the project proponent, is distinct in the industry for its patented radial sawing technology, which maximizes timber yield from smaller logs. This carbon project likely integrates with their broader sustainability strategy, which includes a "closed-loop" timber and energy precinct in Yarram. The project is supported by The Carbon Farming Foundation, acting as a participant to facilitate the carbon credit generation process.
