Bulimba Station - Cool Burn Fire Project

Project Information:

Bulimba Station - Cool Burn Fire Project is a Savanna Fire Management project located in the remote Mareeba Shire of Far North Queensland. The project area is situated approximately 220km west of Mareeba and north of Chillagoe, near the Mitchell River. Registered in November 2024, the project covers a substantial area of 112,477 hectares. The region is predominantly used for pastoral cattle grazing, typified by the expansive Bulimba Station pastoral lease.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Savanna Fire Management, Sequestration and Emissions Avoidance) Methodology Determination 2018. This methodology credits land managers for implementing strategic "cool burns", low-intensity fires ignited in the early dry season. These controlled burns reduce the heavy fuel loads that fuel destructive, high-intensity wildfires in the late dry season. Uniquely, this specific determination allows the project to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for both avoiding greenhouse gas emissions (methane and nitrous oxide) and for the carbon sequestered in dead organic matter (logs and coarse woody debris) that is preserved by reducing fire severity.

Environmentally, the project is classified within the "low rainfall zone" of the savanna region, receiving between 600mm and 1000mm of rainfall annually. The landscape is characteristic of the Einasleigh Uplands and Gulf Plains, typically featuring vast open woodlands and grasslands supported by soils that range from massive red earths to sandy loams and grey clays near river systems.

The project is managed by Corporate Carbon Advisory Pty Ltd. The "Cool Burn" in the project title references the adoption of traditional Indigenous fire management techniques combined with modern aerial incendiary capabilities to create fire breaks and mosaic patterns across the landscape.
