Project Information:

Lenah2024R_Tunnack_S3 is a plantation forestry project located near the rural locality of Tunnack, approximately 60 kilometers north of Hobart in Tasmania. Registered on November 18, 2024, the project covers an area of roughly 139 hectares. The site is situated in the Southern Midlands region, an area characterized by a mix of agricultural grazing land and forestry operations, often transitioning between the open plains of the Midlands and the more rugged Central Highlands.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves "avoided conversion" activities, likely falling under Schedule 3 of the method. This stream allows proponents to generate carbon credits by continuing to manage land as a plantation forest when there is a demonstrated viability and intent to convert the land to a non-forest use, such as agriculture. By maintaining the plantation, typically consisting of Radiata Pine in this portfolio, the project sequesters carbon that would otherwise be released if the trees were removed for pasture or cropping.

Environmentally, Tunnack experiences a cool-temperate climate typical of inland Tasmania. The area receives moderate annual rainfall of approximately 620mm, which supports both dryland farming and commercial forestry. The landscape typically features soils derived from dolerite or sandstone, which are common in the Tasmanian Midlands and support the region's mosaic of grazing and woodland.

The proponent, Lenah Estate Pty Ltd, is a special purpose vehicle established by the investment manager New Forests to hold assets acquired from Norske Skog in 2020. The estate is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forestry management firm. This specific project appears to be part of a larger effort to optimize the carbon and timber value of the 27,000+ hectare estate, which was historically focused on supplying the Boyer paper mill.
