Project Information:
Limestone2025R_HandreckL_S3 is a plantation forestry project located approximately 7km north of the town of Macarthur in South-West Victoria. Registered on December 3, 2024, the project covers 98.35 hectares. It is situated within the renowned "Green Triangle" forestry region, an area characterized by a mix of intensive grazing (sheep and cattle) and large-scale softwood and hardwood plantations.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it utilizes the 'avoided conversion' activity. This mechanism credits the carbon sequestered by maintaining a plantation forest that was at significant risk of being converted to non-forest land (such as agricultural pasture) following harvest. By committing to continue the plantation cycle rather than clearing the land for grazing or cropping, the project avoids the emissions associated with biomass removal and soil disturbance.
The Macarthur region features a cool temperate climate with high reliable rainfall, typically exceeding 700mm annually, which is vital for commercial timber growth. The local environment is defined by the Victorian Volcanic Plain, suggesting the soil composition likely consists of fertile, albeit often rocky, basalt clays or clay loams.
A key detail of this project is its connection to a significant regional acquisition. The project name 'Limestone' and the registered participant change (from "The Trust Company... ANZFOF2" to "OneFortyOne Plantations") align with OneFortyOne's acquisition of the 'Limestone Plantation' estate from New Forests. This specific project likely represents the 'Handreck' block, a 98-hectare portion of that larger estate, which has been transitioned into a carbon project to prevent its conversion back to farmland.
