Messner Carbon Project 23

Project Information:

Messner Carbon Project 23 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Shire of Westonia in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The project area covers approximately 389 hectares and is situated roughly 35km north of the Westonia townsite, near the locality of Warrachuppin. Registered in August 2024, the project is part of a series of carbon farming initiatives on the property, managed by proponent Agriprove Solutions.

The Westonia region is situated on the eastern fringe of Western Australia’s intensive agricultural zone, characterized by broadacre wheat and sheep farming. The environment is classified as semi-arid to low rainfall, with an average annual precipitation of approximately 330mm. The landscape typically features sandy duplex soils and calcareous loamy earths, which are common in the central Wheatbelt and often require careful management to maintain productivity and soil health.

Operating under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, this project seeks to increase soil organic carbon levels by modifying land management practices. Specifically, the project activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By correcting these deficiencies, the project aims to boost plant growth and biomass production, which in turn increases the amount of carbon captured and stored in the soil profile over the 25-year crediting period.
