Kopyje Station Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Kopyje Station Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located on the pastoral property "Kopyje," approximately 60km east of Cobar and 115km southwest of Nyngan in the Orana region of New South Wales. Registered in November 2024, the project covers a massive 8,756 hectares of grazing land.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for measurable increases in soil organic carbon (SOC). To achieve this, the project involves implementing new management activities designed to build carbon stocks, specifically altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to improve ground cover and soil health. Additionally, the project design includes the use of legume species in pasture systems to fix nitrogen and support biomass growth.

The Cobar and Nyngan region is a semi-arid landscape heavily utilized for rangeland grazing of cattle, sheep, and goats. The environmental conditions at Kopyje Station are typical of the area, featuring flat to slightly undulating red loam soils, with heavier grey soils found along watercourses. The vegetation includes characteristic native species such as Box, Kurrajong, Pine, and Mallee ridges.

An interesting note about this property is its recent change in stewardship; Kopyje Station was sold in 2022 to Steph Hughes, a primary producer and lawyer from Forbes, ending a period of ownership by overseas investors. The project is managed in partnership with Carbon Link, a major aggregator known for using advanced soil measurement technology to baselining and monitoring carbon levels.
