Elouera Reforestation Project

Project Information:

The Elouera Reforestation Project is an environmental planting project located approximately 25km west of Burren Junction in the Walgett Shire of northern New South Wales. Registered in March 2024, the project covers a significant area of roughly 1,090 hectares. The project site sits within the North West Slopes and Plains region, an area historically dominated by broadacre cropping (such as wheat and cotton) and grazing operations.

This project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This method requires the establishment of permanent plantings of native tree species on land that has been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. The "environmental planting" designation typically mandates a stocking density sufficient to achieve forest cover (often defined as achieving a canopy cover of at least 20% and height of 2 meters), utilising species native to the local area to restore biodiversity while sequestering carbon.

The environment in the Walgett Shire is classified as semi-arid to sub-humid, characterised by hot summers and variable rainfall that is generally summer-dominant. The soil in this region, particularly near Burren Junction and the Wee Waa district, is renowned for its heavy grey and black Vertosols (cracking clay soils). These fertile soils are highly productive for agriculture but also support robust native vegetation regeneration when grazing pressure is managed. The project is managed by Carbon Projects Co Pty Ltd, with Permagen Planting Management Pty Ltd acting as the agent.
