Glenfield Landfill Gas Project

Project Information:
Glenfield Landfill Gas Project is a landfill gas capture project located at the Glenfield Landfill, approximately 28km north of Tumby Bay on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It was registered on June 11, 2024, by the proponent LMS Energy Pty Ltd.
Landfill gas projects involve the installation of active infrastructure to collect methane-rich biogas emitted by decomposing organic matter. Under the standard methodology requirements, the captured methane must be combusted, typically through flaring or power generation engines. This converts the highly potent methane into less harmful carbon dioxide, thereby significantly reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.
The Eyre Peninsula region surrounding the project is heavily utilized for primary production, predominantly broadacre cropping and livestock grazing. The local environment is generally classified as having a Mediterranean to semi-arid climate with moderate winter rainfall, and the regional soils mostly consist of calcareous sandy loams over clay or limestone.
This specific project involves installing a new landfill gas collection system to capture and combust gas generated from both legacy and non-legacy waste at the site. Interestingly, the Glenfield Landfill is operated by Veolia Environmental Services and serves as a major regional waste hub. It processes municipal waste from several local government areas across the peninsula, including the City of Port Lincoln, the City of Whyalla, and the District Council of Tumby Bay. By managing the emissions from this consolidated waste, the project transforms a critical regional utility into an active carbon abatement site.
