Romani Carbon Project

Project Information:
The Romani Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 27km south of Forbes in the Central West region of New South Wales. Registered in July 2024, the project covers a project area of 830.24 hectares. The project operates on the property "Romani," which is situated in a region renowned for mixed farming, incorporating both cropping (wheat, canola) and livestock grazing (sheep, cattle) operations.
The project utilizes the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. This method requires establishing a baseline for soil carbon stocks through sampling and then implementing new management activities to increase those stocks over time. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, a practice designed to boost plant growth and subsequently sequester more carbon in the soil profile.
Environmentally, the Forbes and Grenfell region is characterized by a temperate to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 500-600mm. The soils in this area are typically red chromosols (red-brown earths) and loams, which are productive but can benefit significantly from improved nutrient management and carbon-building practices. Notably, the project underwent a variation in October 2025, where specific areas originally listed were removed from the project boundary. The proponent, Loam Carbon Pty Ltd, specializes in soil carbon projects, often integrating microbial soil technology alongside traditional land management changes.
