Romani Carbon Project

Project Information:
Romani Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 28km south of Forbes in the Central West region of New South Wales. It was registered in July 2024 and initially covered an area of 830.24 hectares. A project variation processed on October 8, 2025, saw specific listed areas removed from the total project boundary.
The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models Methodology Determination 2021. Soil carbon projects require landholders to introduce a new, eligible management activity designed to actively build soil organic carbon. Standard requirements involve conducting rigorous baseline soil sampling across defined Carbon Estimation Areas (CEAs) and using physical laboratory testing at subsequent intervals to demonstrate carbon stock increases, which allows the proponent to claim Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
The general land use in the Forbes region is predominantly mixed farming, featuring broadacre cropping (such as wheat, barley, and canola) alongside livestock grazing for cattle and sheep. The environment typically experiences a temperate to semi-arid climate with moderate annual rainfall. Soils in this agricultural area commonly consist of red-brown earths, clay loams, and alluvial soils near the Lachlan River, which provide a highly responsive foundation for soil remediation and carbon sequestration.
This project specifically targets soil health by applying nutrients to the land in the form of synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser to address a material deficiency. By resolving these material nutrient deficiencies, the project stimulates stronger plant and root biomass growth in the agricultural system, which directly draws down and stores additional atmospheric carbon in the soil profile. The project is managed by the developer Loam Carbon Pty Ltd.
