Romani Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Romani Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 30km south of Forbes in the Central West region of New South Wales. Registered in July 2024, the project initially covered a project area of 830 hectares, though a variation in October 2025 saw some areas removed from the project boundary. The property is situated near the locality of Wirrinya/Garema, a region characterized by mixed farming operations including winter cropping (wheat, canola) and livestock grazing.

This project operates under the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" methodology. This method awards carbon credits for land management activities that store carbon in the soil, such as changing stocking densities, retaining stubble, or modifying fertilizer strategies. Specifically, the Romani project has registered activities focused on applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material soil deficiencies. Given the proponent is Loam Carbon Pty Ltd, it is highly likely the project also integrates their specialized microbial seed coating technology (CarbonBuilder) designed to enhance stable soil carbon formation through fungal endophytes.

The surrounding environment in the Lachlan Valley typically experiences a semi-arid to temperate climate with an annual rainfall of approximately 550mm to 600mm. The soils in this area are commonly Red Chromosols (red-brown earths) and clays, which are considered productive for agriculture but can benefit significantly from improved carbon levels to boost water retention and nutrient cycling.
