Jarrahmond Linkage to the Snowy River

Project Information:
Jarrahmond Linkage to the Snowy River is an environmental planting project located in the locality of Jarrahmond, Victoria, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the town of Orbost. Registered in January 2024, the project covers roughly 140 hectares of land situated near the banks of the Snowy River.
The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology, which involves establishing permanent native vegetation on land previously used for agriculture. In this context, the method generally requires planting species native to the local area at a density sufficient to achieve forest cover (typically at least 200 stems per hectare). The project creates a biodiversity corridor, as implied by the name "Linkage," likely connecting fragmented vegetation on the property to the riparian zone of the Snowy River.
The East Gippsland region around Orbost is characterized by a temperate climate with reliable, moderate-to-high rainfall, averaging between 800mm and 900mm annually. The land use in the Jarrahmond area is traditionally agricultural, focusing on beef and dairy cattle grazing, as well as vegetable cropping on the fertile river flats. The soils in this location are predominantly fertile alluvial loams and silts deposited by the Snowy River, transitioning to sandy loams or clay soils on the rising terraces away from the riverbank.
