Reith Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Reith Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration initiative located in the rural locality of Moorngag, approximately 15km south of the major regional centre of Benalla in north-east Victoria. Registered in May 2024, the project covers an area of 176.69 hectares.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology credits the increases in soil organic carbon stocks resulting from new management activities. Specifically, this project aims to sequester carbon by re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures (seeding or pasture cropping) and altering grazing practices (stocking rate, duration, or intensity) to improve soil health and vegetation cover. As the proponent, Agriprove Solutions likely facilitates the soil sampling, baselining, and ongoing compliance reporting required to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

The Benalla and Moorngag region is a well-established mixed farming zone, predominantly utilized for cattle and sheep grazing as well as fodder cropping. The area typically experiences a temperate climate with reliable rainfall, averaging between 600mm and 700mm annually, with the wettest periods occurring in winter and spring. The local soils are generally characterized as texture-contrast soils, often featuring loam or sandy loam topsoils overlying clay subsoils, which are conducive to pasture growth when managed effectively.
