Burrilda Environmental Plantings Project

Project Information:
Burrilda Environmental Plantings Project is an environmental planting project located near the rural locality of Kentucky, approximately 20 kilometers south of Uralla and 50 kilometers northeast of Tamworth in the New England region of New South Wales. Registered in February 2024, the project covers roughly 325 hectares of land situated within the Tamworth Regional Council area.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that was historically cleared for agricultural use, specifically for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the plantings must be maintained to reach a forest cover standard, typically requiring a specific stocking density (often equivalent to at least 200 stems per hectare) that allows the trees to reach a height of at least two meters and crown cover of at least 20 per cent.
The Kentucky and Uralla region is situated on the New England Tablelands, an area renowned for high-quality fine wool production and cattle grazing. The environment is characterized by a temperate climate with relatively high rainfall compared to western inland regions, averaging between 750mm and 850mm annually. The soils in this specific pocket are often derived from granite or trap rock (sedimentary/metamorphic), which historically supported native woodlands before being cleared for pasture.
The project is developed by Forest Carbon Pty Ltd in conjunction with Climate Friendly Pty Ltd, two significant service providers in the Australian carbon market. The transition of this property from predominant agricultural use to a permanent mixed-species forest suggests a diversification strategy, leveraging the region's reliable rainfall to maximize carbon sequestration rates using the FullCAM model.
