Upper Allyn Forestry Project

Project Information:

The Upper Allyn Forestry Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Upper Allyn region of the Hunter Valley, approximately 50km north of Dungog, New South Wales. Registered in June 2024, the project covers a targeted area of nearly 28 hectares situated in the foothills of the Barrington Tops.

The project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically focusing on the transition of an existing plantation forest into a permanent forest. This activity involves retaining trees that were originally established for commercial harvest and managing them as a permanent carbon sink instead. By doing so, the project prevents the carbon stored in the timber from being released through harvesting and processing, and safeguards the land from potential conversion to non-forested uses, such as grazing pasture.

The Upper Allyn region is characterized by a lush, high-rainfall climate that supports dense vegetation, including warm temperate and subtropical rainforests. The area serves as a gateway to the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park and is known for its fertile soils, typically derived from ancient volcanic basalt and clay loams, which are ideal for sustaining rapid tree growth. While the broader Dungog Shire is known for cattle grazing and dairy farming, this specific locality is heavily associated with forestry and conservation.

This project is managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, a proponent with a diverse portfolio including soil carbon and environmental planting projects across New South Wales.
