Upper Allyn Forestry Project
ERF189320
Project Information:
Upper Allyn Forestry Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Upper Allyn region of New South Wales, approximately 35 kilometers north of the town of Dungog. Registered on June 7, 2024, the project covers a relatively small area of roughly 28 hectares. The site sits within the foothills of the Barrington Tops, a region historically utilized for timber harvesting and cattle grazing due to its fertile environment and proximity to state forests.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the "transition to permanent forest" activity (Schedule 4). This approach generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by taking an existing commercial plantation, which would otherwise be harvested and potentially converted to non-forested land such as pasture, and instead maintaining it as a permanent forest. The carbon abatement is achieved by retaining the trees and their stored carbon on the land indefinitely, rather than releasing it through harvest and clearing.
Environmental conditions in the Upper Allyn area are conducive to rapid tree growth, characterized by high reliable rainfall and fertile soils, typically consisting of loams and clays derived from basaltic or alluvial origins. This high-rainfall zone supports wet sclerophyll forests and rainforest pockets, making it ideal for high-biomass forestry projects. The project is managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, a proponent that specializes in helping landholders in high-rainfall areas transition agricultural or forestry assets into carbon sequestration projects.
