Warriup Project

Project Information:
Warriup Project is a Plantation Forestry project located in the Wellstead Locale, approximately 60km northeast of Albany in Western Australia. It was registered in February 2024 and covers an area of 198.68 hectares, forming part of a broader 913-hectare permanent eucalypt forest property.
Plantation Forestry projects under this methodology involve transitioning an existing, short-rotation plantation forest into a permanent planting. Standard requirements dictate that the forest must be protected from commercial timber harvesting and land clearing. By ceasing harvest rotations and maintaining permanent forest cover, the project sequesters carbon long-term and prevents the plantation from being converted back to non-forested agricultural land.
The Wellstead and Green Range region is well known for mixed farming, particularly sheep grazing and broadacre cropping (such as canola and cereals), alongside significant conservation reserves. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with a medium average annual rainfall of around 400–460mm. Soils in this region are typically deep sands, sandy duplexes, and gravelly loams over clay permeability layers.
This project delivers high rates of carbon drawdown due to the established permanent eucalypt forest, which sequesters carbon much faster than newly planted mixed-species. Situated within the globally recognised Gondwana Link corridor, it connects with the Green Range Nature Reserves and Tinkelelup Nature Reserves, providing habitat for endemic and threatened species, including reported quokka populations. Central to the Warriup Project is its cultural impact, as it involves returning the legal land title to the Menang Noongar People to support First Nations' self-determination, stewardship, and cultural reconnection. Additionally, on 20 March 2025, the project's participant name was officially varied from Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd to The Trustee for Warriup Carbon Trust.
