Warriup Project

Project Information:

The Warriup Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Wellstead locale, approximately 60km northeast of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Registered on February 21, 2024, the project covers a designated area of 198.68 hectares within the larger Warriup property. The region is predominantly utilized for broadacre agriculture and commercial blue gum forestry, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm summers. The local environment typically features sandy duplex soils and marine sediments associated with the Pallinup siltstone formation, supporting diverse native vegetation.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the "transition to permanent forest" activity, which allows a proponent to retain an existing plantation forest, that would otherwise be harvested and converted to non-forested land (such as pasture), as a permanent carbon sink. By cancelling the harvest rotation and protecting the trees for a 100-year permanence period, the project avoids the emissions associated with clearing and allows the forest to continue sequestering carbon as it matures.

A significant aspect of the Warriup Project is its contribution to the Gondwana Link, a major conservation initiative aimed at reconnecting fragmented habitats across south-western Australia. The site links the Green Range and Tinkelelup Nature Reserves, providing a critical corridor for biodiversity, including threatened species. Notably, the project involves a partnership that returns legal land title to the Menang Noongar People, integrating carbon farming with Indigenous land stewardship. In March 2025, the project participant officially changed from Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd to Warriup Carbon Pty Ltd as Trustee for Warriup Carbon Trust.
