Devon Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Devon Carbon Project is a plantation forestry initiative located in the Shire of Chapman Valley, Western Australia. Situated approximately 100km northeast of the regional city of Geraldton, the project appears to be centered near the agricultural locality of Wandana. Historical records for the district indicate a property known as "Devon Farm" was established in this area in the 1930s, likely serving as the namesake and location for the modern project. Registered in December 2023, the project initially covered a substantial area of 5,395 hectares, though a variation in May 2025 saw some areas removed from the project boundary.

This project operates under the Plantation Forestry methodology, which incentivizes the establishment of new plantation forests or the conversion of short-rotation plantations to long-rotation systems. Unlike many carbon projects that focus solely on permanent conservation, this method allows for the commercial harvesting of wood products while generating carbon credits for the carbon sequestered in the trees during their growth cycle. The project activities specifically involve establishing a new plantation forest on land where such forests did not previously exist.

The surrounding Chapman Valley and Wandana region is part of Western Australia's Northern Agricultural Region, typically characterized by broadacre cropping (wheat, canola, lupins) and sheep grazing. The environment here is semi-arid to Mediterranean, with rainfall averaging between 300mm and 400mm annually. Soils in this zone often consist of yellow sandplains and red sandy loams, which are productive for agriculture but can be fragile. The project is developed by Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, a Western Australian-based proponent specializing in carbon farming and environmental offset solutions.
