Devon Carbon Project

Project Information:

The Devon Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Chapman Valley region of Western Australia’s Mid West. Situated approximately 80 kilometers northeast of the major regional city of Geraldton and 70 kilometers east of Northampton, the project sits within a landscape traditionally dominated by broadacre cropping and grazing. Registered on December 19, 2023, the project originally covered a substantial area of 5,395 hectares, though a variation in May 2025 resulted in the removal of some land from the project area.

This project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Unlike environmental plantings which are designed to be permanent forests, this methodology allows for the establishment of new plantation forests for commercial harvesting. The project activity involves planting trees that will sequester carbon as they grow, with the potential for wood product harvesting in rotational cycles. The proponent, Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, is a carbon farming developer that was acquired by Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) in 2021 to support their net-zero goals.

The region typically experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Annual rainfall in this inland part of the Mid West generally ranges between 300mm and 400mm, supporting wheatbelt agriculture and dryland forestry. The local soils are often described as "sandplains," consisting of deep siliceous sands or red loamy duplexes, which are characteristic of the Northern Agricultural Region. The project integrates commercial tree planting with existing agricultural land uses, a model Outback Carbon describes as ensuring coexistence between farming and carbon sequestration.
