Possamunga Station Native Forest Revival Project

Project Information:
Possamunga Station Native Forest Revival Project is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located at Possamunga Station, approximately 50km south-east of Quilpie in South West Queensland. Registered in September 2023, the project covers a significant expanse of 64,417 hectares within the Quilpie Shire. The region is traditionally dominated by grazing operations for sheep and cattle, as well as mining activities famous for boulder opals.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which involves regenerating permanent even-aged native forests by removing suppression activities that prevent regrowth. For Possamunga Station, this entails the cessation of mechanical clearing and the careful management of livestock grazing to allow the in-situ seed bank, including rootstock and lignotubers, to recover and mature into forest.
Environmentally, the location sits within a hot semi-arid climate zone (Köppen classification BSh), typical of Queensland's Mulga Lands. The terrain is characterized by red earth soils supporting Mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands and other drought-resistant native vegetation. The project is co-developed by Climate Revive Pty Ltd and Corporate Carbon Advisory. Climate Revive, led by environmental scientist Khory Hancock, focuses on acquiring and repurposing cattle stations for carbon sequestration and biodiversity outcomes, aiming to bridge the gap between agricultural viability and environmental restoration.
