Lawrence Carbon Project 3

Project Information:

Lawrence Carbon Project 3 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 35 kilometers north of the town of Eneabba and 40 kilometers southeast of Dongara. Registered on September 18, 2024, the project covers a land area of 377.18 hectares. The project is situated within the Arrowsmith River catchment area, a region traditionally dominated by broadacre mixed farming, including grain cropping (wheat, canola, lupins) and sheep grazing.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021. This high-integrity methodology requires landholders to implement "new management activities" designed to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Unlike tree-planting projects, soil carbon projects integrate with existing farming operations. The carbon stock is measured via baseline soil core sampling and subsequent rounds of sampling (or modelling) over a 25-year crediting period to quantify the increase in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC).

Environmentally, the site is located on the Eneabba sandplains, characterized by deep sandy soils and sandy loams. These soils typically have low inherent fertility and water-holding capacity, making them responsive to the project's specific activities, which include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, averaging approximately 450mm to 500mm of rainfall annually. To further build soil health in this sandy environment, the project proponents are utilising cover crops and introducing legume species into their cropping or pasture systems, which naturally fix nitrogen and increase biomass.

The project is developed by Agriprove Solutions Co No.2 Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Agriprove, which is currently the largest developer of soil carbon projects in Australia.
