The Arnold River Project (Revoked)

Project Information:

The Arnold River Project (Revoked) is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located in the remote Roper Gulf region of the Northern Territory, approximately 230 kilometers southeast of Katherine. The massive project area, covering over 110,935 hectares, is situated near the Arnold River, a tributary of the Hodgson River. The surrounding landscape is dominated by large-scale pastoral leases used primarily for cattle breeding and grazing, typical of the Northern Territory's top end.

This project was operated under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which requires landholders to cease suppression activities, such as unrestricted grazing or mechanical clearing, to allow native forests to naturally regenerate. The project specifically focused on managing the timing and extent of grazing to facilitate this regrowth. The local environment is characterized by a tropical savanna climate with a distinct monsoonal wet season and a long dry season. The terrain supports open woodlands and eucalypt forests on soils that generally consist of sandy loams and ironstone gravels, with heavier clays found in the riverine floodplains.

Registered in September 2023 by Wonga Ag Eleven Pty Ltd, the project had a short lifespan. It was formally revoked on April 8, 2025. Wonga Ag Eleven is an entity associated with Wealthcheck Funds Management, a group that faced significant financial turbulence and receivership proceedings regarding its agricultural portfolio in 2024. The project engaged Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd as an agent and aimed to sequester carbon in the woody biomass of the regenerating forest, but its revocation suggests the project was terminated prior to the completion of its crediting period.
