Southern Rivers Conservation Initiative Site #9

Project Information:

Southern Rivers Conservation Initiative Site #9 is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located approximately 65km northwest of Charleville in South West Queensland. Registered in September 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 54,806 hectares. The region is predominantly utilized for sheep and cattle grazing, characterized by the iconic "Mulga lands" which provide valuable fodder during dry periods.

The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which credits landholders for regenerating native forests by removing suppression activities. In this context, the project likely involves managing the timing and extent of grazing and suppressing feral animals to allow native vegetation, typically Mulga (Acacia aneura) and associated species, to regenerate from in-situ seed banks and rootstock.

Environmentally, the Charleville region is classified as semi-arid with an average annual rainfall of approximately 500mm. The soils in this specific location are generally low-fertility red earths (Kandosols) and sandy loams, which differ from the cracking clays found further east.

A notable aspect of this project is its proponent, Devine Agribusiness Carbon Pty Ltd. This entity was acquired by GreenCollar in 2021, a major environmental markets developer. The "Southern Rivers" naming convention suggests this project is part of a broader aggregated portfolio of properties in the Warrego river or Paroo river catchments managed to optimize carbon sequestration alongside pastoral operations.
