Landari Yea 2022

Project Information:

Landari Yea 2022 is a plantation forestry project located in the Murrindindi Shire of Victoria, approximately 25 kilometers northeast of the town of Yea. Registered in November 2023, the project covers an area of roughly 59 hectares situated within the Central Highlands region. This area is traditionally characterized by a mix of agricultural land uses, primarily cattle and sheep grazing, alongside significant commercial forestry operations utilizing species such as Radiata Pine.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, specifically utilizing the "transition to permanent forest" activity (Schedule 4). This methodology allows plantation owners to generate carbon credits by committing to retain an existing plantation forest permanently, rather than harvesting the timber and converting the land back to non-forested agricultural use (such as pasture). By maintaining the trees as a permanent carbon sink, the project avoids the emissions associated with harvesting and soil disturbance while ensuring long-term sequestration.

The local environment in the Murrindindi region typically experiences moderate to high rainfall, averaging between 700mm and 900mm annually, which supports robust timber growth. The terrain usually consists of sedimentary rises with soil types ranging from friable loams to clay loams, which are well-suited for both forestry and pasture. Landari Pty Ltd, the project proponent, is a specialized developer focused on carbon and biodiversity offsets, often engaging in projects that prevent the reversion of plantation estates to cleared farmland, a common trend in the region as agricultural land values rise.
