Project Information:

Landari Uplands 2 2022 is a plantation forestry project located in the locality of Conara, approximately 55km south-east of Launceston in Tasmania. Registered in December 2023, the project covers a total area of 322.31 hectares. The project operates within the Northern Midlands region, an area traditionally dominated by dryland agriculture, particularly sheep grazing for fine wool production, as well as cropping and forestry operations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the "avoided conversion" of plantation land. This means the project ensures that an existing or recently harvested plantation is re-established and maintained as a forest for commercial harvest, rather than being cleared and converted into non-forested land (such as pasture for grazing) which would release stored carbon.

The environment in the Northern Midlands is characterized as a dry sub-humid cool inland lowland. The area receives a relatively low average annual rainfall of approximately 550mm, significantly less than Tasmania's western or coastal regions. Soils in the region are diverse but predominantly sandy or duplex types (sandy loam over clay), with some areas of fertile basaltic soils in river valleys.

The project proponent, Landari Pty Ltd, is a Tasmanian-based company specializing in forestry and land-sector carbon projects. An interesting development for this project occurred in June 2024, when a variation was approved to add further area to the project, suggesting an expansion of the protected plantation estate. The "Uplands" designation in the project name likely refers to the specific topography or property aggregation within the Midlands region.
