Landari Uplands 2 2022

Project Information:

Landari Uplands 2 2022 is a plantation forestry project located in the Northern Midlands local government area of Tasmania, approximately 40km southeast of Launceston. It was registered in December 2023 and covers a project area of 322.31 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects registered under the 2022 methodology determination involve establishing and maintaining new plantation forests for the commercial harvesting of wood products. This project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or recently harvested plantation to non-forested land, ensuring the area continues to operate as a productive commercial forest rather than being permanently cleared for alternative land uses.

The Northern Midlands region is historically known for a mix of agriculture, primarily sheep and beef grazing, some cropping, and extensive private forestry operations. The area experiences a temperate climate with moderate rainfall. Soils in these upland forestry zones are typically composed of sandy loams and dolerite-derived clay and podzolic soils, which provide a highly suitable foundation for commercial timber growth.

The project is co-managed by Landari Pty Ltd and Robert Downie. Downie is an experienced Tasmanian tree grower who successfully integrates forestry into productive regional landscapes, managing around 10,000 hectares of private forestry on his "Benham" property. He also serves as a Director on the Board of Private Forests Tasmania. The project has undergone two notable variations: in June 2024, additional area was added to the project, and in May 2026, Robert Downie was officially added as a joint participant alongside Landari Pty Ltd. According to the Clean Energy Regulator, the project has successfully been issued 6,891 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to date.
