Brereton Carbon Project 9

Project Information:

Brereton Carbon Project 9 is a soil carbon project located in the Mid North region of South Australia, approximately 30km east of the major regional centre of Port Pirie. Registered in December 2023, the project covers a land area of roughly 168 hectares. The site sits inland from the Spencer Gulf, near the locality of Telowie and the foothills of the Southern Flinders Ranges. The surrounding region is predominantly utilized for mixed farming operations, including cereal cropping and livestock grazing.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through specific management changes. In this instance, the project activities focus on applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. These activities are designed to minimize soil disturbance and improve soil health, thereby sequestering carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

Environmentally, the region experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 350–450mm. The local soil composition is typically characterized by calcareous sandy loams or red-brown earths, often with clay subsoils common to the Port Germein and Telowie land systems. Agriprove, the project proponent, is a notable developer in the sector, often utilizing satellite technology and advanced modelling to monitor soil carbon changes across their portfolio.
