Brereton Carbon Project 2

Project Information:
Brereton Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located approximately 30km northeast of Port Pirie in the Mid North region of South Australia. Registered in December 2023, the project covers nearly 134 hectares near the localities of Napperby and Telowie, situated in the foothills of the Southern Flinders Ranges. The area is traditionally utilized for mixed farming operations, including broadacre cropping and livestock grazing, which are the primary land uses targeted for soil carbon improvements.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, specifically the "Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models" determination. This method requires landholders to implement new or materially different management activities to draw carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the soil. For this specific project, the registered activities involve applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies and converting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-tillage practices. These changes are designed to minimize soil disturbance and enhance biomass production, thereby increasing soil organic carbon stocks over the 25-year crediting period.
Environmentally, the Mid North region experiences a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with an average annual rainfall between 350mm and 450mm, which increases slightly towards the ranges. The soils in this area are typically calcareous or texture-contrast soils (loam over clay), which can be susceptible to erosion but are productive under careful management. The project is facilitated by AgriProve, a major soil carbon project developer in Australia, and appears to be part of a larger aggregation of projects, as evidenced by the registration of a "Brereton Carbon Project 3" in the same vicinity.
