Kingia Plains Carbon Project

Project Information:

Kingia Plains Carbon Project is a permanent mallee planting project located at Arrowsmith East in the Shire of Three Springs, Western Australia. The project is situated approximately 30km north of Eneabba and 45km southeast of the coastal town of Dongara. Registered in June 2023, the project covers 338 hectares of what was previously agricultural land.

The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM" methodology. This involves establishing native mallee species (multistemmed eucalypts endemic to the area) on land that was cleared for grazing or cropping for at least five years prior to the project. While mallee plantings can sometimes be harvested for biomass, this specific project is designated as a "permanent mallee planting," meaning the trees will remain in the ground to act as a permanent carbon sink rather than being harvested.

The Arrowsmith East region is part of the "Sandplain" country in WA's Mid West, an area historically utilized for broadacre cropping, sheep grazing, and mineral sands mining. The environment is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Rainfall in the nearby town of Eneabba averages approximately 500mm annually. The soils in this location are typically non-wetting grey sands and sandy loams, supporting the region's status as a biodiversity hotspot for Kwongan heathland wildflowers.

Notably, the project land is owned by Strike Energy and is associated with their "Mid West Low Carbon Manufacturing Precinct." However, the carbon project itself is operated by INPEX New Energy Business Australia. It appears to be part of the "Wheatbelt Connect" initiative, a collaboration involving INPEX, ANZ, and Qantas designed to generate carbon credits through native reforestation in the WA Wheatbelt.
