Casotti Carbon Project
ERF185441
Project Information:
The Casotti Carbon Project is a plantation forestry project located in the Shire of Coorow, Western Australia, approximately 28 kilometers west of the town of Coorow. Registered in November 2023, the project covers an area of 1,819 hectares within the Mid West agricultural region. The project is managed by Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU).
Operating under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, the project involves establishing a new plantation forest on land where no forest previously existed. Unlike permanent environmental plantings, this methodology allows for commercial harvesting, meaning the trees are grown for both carbon sequestration and wood products. The project design specifically incorporates a "clean and simple" layout intended to support future grazing opportunities, allowing the land to serve a dual purpose of forestry and agriculture (silvopasture).
The Coorow and Eneabba region is characterized by its sandplain geography, utilized extensively for broadacre cropping and grazing. The specific site conditions for the Casotti project are described as deep sand plains with gravel seams. The area typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with rainfall averaging roughly 350mm to 500mm annually, falling predominantly in winter. The project is named in association with the Casotti family, well-known in Western Australia as major fruit growers and agricultural landowners.
