Emu Creek Bar-Barrum

Project Information:
Emu Creek Bar-Barrum is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located on Emu Creek Station, approximately 25km west of Dimbulah and inland from the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland. Registered in September 2023, the project covers a significant area of 21,113 hectares. The property itself is a working cattle station that has diversified into tourism, well-known locally as "Emu Creek Station Outback Holiday," offering bush camping and 4WD experiences along the sandy banks of Emu Creek.
The project operates under the Human-Induced Regeneration methodology, which focuses on regenerating permanent native forests on land where vegetation growth has been historically suppressed. In this context, the suppression is primarily caused by livestock grazing and feral animals. By managing the timing and extent of grazing, and effectively controlling feral pests, the project aims to allow existing rootstock and seeds (lignotubers) to regenerate into a mature forest canopy. The "Permanent Even-Aged Native Forest" classification implies the goal is to reach a forest cover density that meets specific crown cover and height thresholds (typically 20% cover and 2 meters height).
Environmentally, the region falls within a tropical savanna climate zone, characterized by a distinct wet season (summer) and a dry winter. This climate supports dry sclerophyll woodlands and eucalypt forests typical of the Einasleigh Uplands. The soils in this area, often associated with the local granite geology, are typically sandy to loamy and well-draining, which creates the sandy creek beds the station is famous for. The inclusion of "Bar-Barrum" in the project name pays homage to the Bar-Barrum people, the Traditional Owners of this country in the Western Atherton Tablelands.
