Bromelton Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:

The Bromelton Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas (LFG) project located in the locality of Bromelton, approximately 6 kilometers west of Beaudesert in Southeast Queensland. Registered in July 2023, the project operates within the Bromelton State Development Area (SDA), a major industrial precinct designated for difficult-to-locate industries, including waste management and rail logistics. The surrounding Scenic Rim region is traditionally known for agricultural land use, particularly grazing (beef and dairy) and cropping, although the specific project site is dedicated to waste infrastructure.

This project operates under the Landfill Gas Methodology, which credits the destruction of methane generated by decomposing organic waste. As an "upgrade" project, it involves improving the existing gas collection system, likely through the installation of additional vertical extraction wells or horizontal collectors, to capture methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere. The captured gas is combusted, converting potent methane into less harmful carbon dioxide, and is often utilized for renewable energy generation.

The environmental conditions in the Beaudesert region are characterized by a subhumid, subtropical climate with a summer-dominant rainfall pattern, averaging over 750mm annually. The local terrain typically features heavy clay soils, specifically Vertosols (cracking clays) and alluvial soils associated with the nearby Logan River catchment. The project is managed by LMS Energy, a leading Australian bioenergy company, and sits within a strategic waste management hub that also hosts Scenic Rim Regional Council's Central Waste Facility and proposed future waste-to-energy developments.
