Kempton Station Environmental Planting Project (Revoked)

ERF184552

Project Information:

Kempton Station Environmental Planting Project (Revoked) was a planned environmental planting initiative located approximately 15km northeast of Bundarra and 40km southeast of Inverell in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. Registered in July 2023 and covering nearly 200 hectares, the project area sits within the Inverell Shire Council region. The surrounding landscape is dominated by agricultural grazing, primarily for wool and beef production, characteristic of the New England region.

The project operated under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This method requires the establishment of permanent plantings of native tree species on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years. To generate Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the planting must achieve a "forest cover" status, defined as trees reaching a height of at least two meters with a canopy cover of 20%. While specific stocking densities vary based on species and location to ensure this cover is met, such projects generally require planting densities sufficient to ensure survival and canopy closure, often exceeding 200-400 stems per hectare.

The local environment of the Northern Tablelands is characterized by a temperate climate with a summer-dominant rainfall pattern, typically averaging 700mm to 800mm annually. The soil composition in the Bundarra to Inverell corridor is variable, often featuring granite-derived sandy loams (associated with the Bundarra Granites) and areas of more fertile basalt soils common to the Inverell district.

Notably, this project was revoked on October 29, 2023, less than four months after its registration. The revocation occurred under Section 30 of the CFI Rule, which indicates a voluntary revocation by the proponent where no carbon credits had yet been issued. Public records also indicate that the proponent, Kempton Station Farm Pty Ltd, had previously registered and revoked a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project on the same property (ERF173296), suggesting a history of attempting to establish carbon abatement activities on this land before ultimately withdrawing from the scheme.
