Rockhampton SSO kerbside diversion project (Revoked)

Project Information:
The Rockhampton SSO kerbside diversion project (Revoked) was a waste diversion initiative located in Rockhampton, Queensland. Based on the provided coordinates, the project site was situated approximately 6km east of the Rockhampton city centre, aligning with the location of the Lakes Creek Road Waste Management Facility. Rockhampton itself is a major regional hub often referred to as the "Beef Capital of Australia," surrounded by extensive cattle grazing lands and agricultural operations. The region experiences a sub-tropical climate with summer-dominant rainfall and soils consisting largely of alluvial clays and loams derived from the Fitzroy River floodplain.
Registered in November 2023 and revoked in January 2025, this project operated under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Source Separated Organic Waste) Methodology Determination 2016. This methodology awards carbon credits for diverting organic material, such as food and garden waste, away from landfills, where it would otherwise decompose anaerobically and release methane. Instead, the waste is processed using technologies like enclosed composting to create useful by-products.
The project was described as an "expansion," designed to scale up the diversion of mixed solid waste to a treatment facility. This typically aligns with a transition from a pilot program to a full municipal rollout. Public records indicate that Rockhampton Regional Council conducted a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) trial between 2021 and 2022, diverting hundreds of tonnes of organic waste. However, the council later deferred the decision to implement a region-wide service to wait for clearer state waste regulations. The revocation of this project under Section 30 of the CFI Rule (voluntary revocation) suggests that the specific expansion plan registered in 2023 did not proceed as originally configured. The project listed Dimitrios Dimoliatis as a participant, a name associated with several other waste diversion carbon projects in Queensland.
