Project Information:

SSAA Allambi Revegetation Carbon Project is an environmental planting project located at the Allambi Shooting Complex in Ettrick, approximately 25km north-east of Murray Bridge in South Australia. Registered in August 2023, the project covers nearly 199 hectares of former agricultural land. The region is historically characterized by dryland cereal cropping and grazing, uses which had previously degraded the local landscape.

Environmental planting projects under the relevant methodology typically involve establishing native trees or mallee species on land that has been clear of forest for at least five years. This specific project focuses on restoring "thrashed out" old cereal paddocks by planting mixed mallee species. The goal is to re-establish the original biodiverse woodland to sequester carbon while providing critical habitat for threatened species.

The Ettrick area sits within the Murray Mallee region, which is classified as semi-arid with relatively low rainfall. The soils in this landscape are typically sandy loams or sandy rises over clay and calcrete, characteristic of the Mallee environment.

An interesting facet of this project is its dual purpose: it operates within a larger shooting complex owned by the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SA). The proponent is actively using the carbon project to fund conservation efforts, specifically aiming to create a sanctuary for the vulnerable Malleefowl and the Short-Beaked Echidna, creating ecological connectivity between disrupted conservation lands.
