Ballamore Carbon Project

Project Information:

Ballamore Carbon Project is a commercial plantation forestry project located in the Shire of Northampton, Western Australia, approximately 40km south of the coastal town of Kalbarri and 55km north of Northampton. Registered in June 2023, the project covers a significant area of 1,590 hectares.

The project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically utilizing the "Schedule 1" activity which involves establishing a new plantation on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least seven years. Unlike permanent environmental plantings, this project is designed for commercial harvesting. Carbon credits (ACCUs) are generated based on the long-term average carbon stocks stored in the trees and the wood products derived from them after harvest.

The surrounding region in the Midwest of Western Australia is traditionally used for broadacre cropping (such as wheat and canola) and sheep grazing. The environment is characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with rainfall predominantly occurring in winter (averaging around 350mm-400mm annually). The soils in this specific corridor between Northampton and Kalbarri are typically sandy loams or "sandplain" soils, which differ from the heavy clays found further south. The proponent, Outback Carbon Pty Ltd, is a Western Australian developer known for establishing projects in the Wheatbelt and Midwest regions that often integrate forestry with existing agricultural operations.
