Simmons Carbon Project 2
ERF182922
Project Information:
Simmons Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Loddon Shire of Victoria, approximately 6 kilometers east of Bridgewater on Loddon and 35 kilometers northwest of the regional city of Bendigo. Registered in July 2024, the project covers a relatively concise area of 187 hectares within a region heavily utilized for mixed farming, specifically dryland cropping (such as wheat, barley, and canola) and sheep grazing.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for measurable increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from new management activities. For this specific project, the registered activities include the application of lime to remediate soil acidity, the use of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, and the integration of legume species into pasture or cropping systems. These actions are designed to boost plant growth and root biomass, which in turn drives carbon drawdown into the soil profile.
Environmentally, the Bridgewater and Raywood districts sit within a semi-arid to temperate climatic zone, typically receiving an average annual rainfall of approximately 400mm to 450mm. The local terrain is generally flat to gently undulating, and the soils are characteristically clay loams or sodosols (duplex soils), which can be prone to surface sealing but are productive when well-managed. The project is facilitated by Agriprove, a major service provider in the Australian soil carbon sector, and aims to combine carbon revenue with improved agricultural productivity.
