Bridgewood Farm Project

Project Information:

Bridgewood Farm Project is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 12 kilometers north of Bridgetown in the South West region of Western Australia. Registered in December 2023, the project covers a small area of 12.66 hectares within the locality of Catterick. The region is part of the Blackwood Valley, an area traditionally utilized for cattle grazing, horticulture, and significant hardwood and softwood forestry operations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, the project activity involves "avoided conversion," where an existing plantation managed for short-rotation cropping (typically woodchips or pulp) is converted to a long-rotation management plan. By thinning the forest and allowing the remaining trees to mature into sawlogs over a longer timeframe (often 25+ years), the project sequesters carbon in the standing trees for a longer duration and eventually in long-lived wood products.

Environmentally, the site sits within a high-rainfall Mediterranean climate zone, receiving approximately 700mm to 900mm of rain annually, which is ideal for commercial timber production. The soils in this specific area north of Bridgetown are typically characterized as lateritic gravels and loams, often supporting native Jarrah and Marri forests in surrounding uncleared areas. The proponent, McIntyre Trees Pty Ltd, has been noted in local environmental filings for conducting silvicultural thinning to improve forest health and reduce fire risks, activities that align with the transition to long-rotation forestry.
