Project Information:
Maggies Lane Carbon + Biodiversity Project ID R2 1459 is an environmental planting project located in the Strathbogie Shire, approximately 20 kilometers south-west of Euroa in Victoria. Registered on April 13, 2023, the project covers 35.33 hectares of land that was previously cleared for agricultural use.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This involves establishing permanent plantings of mixed native tree species, such as local eucalypts and acacias, on land that has been clear of forest cover for at least five years. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the plantings must be established at a density sufficient to achieve "forest cover", defined as trees reaching a height of at least 2 meters and achieving greater than 20% crown canopy cover.
Regionally, the site is situated in the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges. This area is characterized by a temperate climate with higher rainfall than the northern plains, typically receiving between 600mm and 800mm annually. The local geology is distinct, often featuring granitic soils (Brown and Yellow Kurosols) which typically present as sandy loams over clay subsoils. The surrounding region is traditionally used for grazing (sheep and cattle) and broadacre farming.
A notable feature of this project is its participation in the Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot (Round 2). This indicates the project proponent, Peter Anthony Bridges, has secured additional stewardship funding to maximize biodiversity outcomes alongside carbon sequestration, specifically targeting the restoration of habitat using species native to the local vegetation community.
