Flinders Aggregation Site #1

Project Information:

Flinders Aggregation Site #1 is a Human-Induced Regeneration (HIR) project located approximately 15km southwest of the township of Blinman in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Registered on June 8, 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 19,386.95 hectares. The site sits within the rugged and geologically significant landscape of the Northern Flinders Ranges, positioned north of the iconic Wilpena Pound.

The Human-Induced Regeneration methodology focuses on restoring native forest cover on land where vegetation has been suppressed, typically by grazing or mechanical clearing. To achieve this, the project undertakes activities such as managing the timing and extent of livestock grazing, controlling feral animals (such as goats, which are common in the rangelands), and managing non-native plants. The goal is to allow the in-situ seed bank, including rootstock and lignotubers, to regenerate into a permanent even-aged native forest.

Regionally, the Flinders Ranges are characterized by a semi-arid climate with annual rainfall averaging around 250mm, though this can vary significantly with elevation. The soils in this area are predominantly clay and skeletal soils derived from the erosion of the ancient sedimentary rock formations that define the ranges. While the region is historically known for pastoral leases (sheep and cattle grazing), there is an increasing shift toward conservation and carbon farming to diversify land use and restore biodiversity.

This project is managed by Terra Carbon Pty Limited, a subsidiary of the GreenCollar Group, which is Australia's largest environmental markets developer. The "Aggregation" in the project name suggests this site may be one of several properties managed together to achieve economies of scale in carbon abatement. The project likely operates on a pastoral lease, allowing the landholder to generate carbon credits (ACCUs) alongside or in place of traditional agricultural operations.
