Project Information:

Glenwood Kareela Farm Carbon + Biodiversity Project ID R2-1407 is an environmental planting project located in the Goulburn Broken region of Victoria, approximately 25 kilometers south of the regional center of Benalla. Registered in April 2023, the project covers roughly 41 hectares of land that was previously used for agricultural purposes, such as grazing or cropping, for at least five years prior to the project's commencement. The site sits near the transition zone between the Victorian riverine plains and the Strathbogie Ranges, an area defined by mixed farming operations and remnant native vegetation.

The project operates under the "Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings" methodology, which involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species. A distinguishing feature of this project is its participation in Round 2 of the Australian Government’s Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot, indicated by the "ID R2-1407" suffix in its title. This pilot scheme allows landholders to stack income streams by generating Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for carbon sequestration while receiving additional cash payments for delivering specific biodiversity outcomes, such as planting diverse, locally appropriate species that create habitats for native wildlife.

Environmentally, the region experiences a temperate climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters, typically receiving between 600mm and 700mm of annual rainfall. The soils in the broader Benalla and Strathbogie area are generally variable, ranging from clay loams on the plains to more friable loams near the ranges, supporting both pasture and native eucalypt woodlands. The project activities focus on revegetating the landscape with a mix of species native to the local area, designed to survive these specific soil and climate conditions while enhancing ecological connectivity.
