Wellwood Farm Carbon Project

Project Information:
Wellwood Farm Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, approximately 40km east of Katanning and 25km north of Gnowangerup. The project was registered in May 2023 and covers a significant landholding of 2,175 hectares. The area is situated within the Shire of Katanning and Shire of Kent, a region traditionally dominated by mixed farming operations including broadacre cropping and sheep grazing.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. To generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), the project must implement new activities that differ from the historical baseline. For Wellwood Farm, these activities include re-establishing or rejuvenating pastures through seeding or pasture cropping, as well as integrating legume species into the cropping or pasture systems to naturally fix nitrogen and build soil health.
Environmentally, the site sits within a Mediterranean climate zone, typically receiving around 350-450mm of annual rainfall, with wet winters and dry summers. The local landscape is characterized by "duplex" soils, often consisting of sandy or gravelly topsoils overlying clay subsoils, which are common in the Western Australian Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions. The project is being undertaken by proponent Stephen John Barrett with the assistance of Carbon West, a specialist consultancy known for supporting farmer-led carbon projects in Western Australia.
