GT Carbon Project 1
ERF181057
Project Information:
GT Carbon Project 1 is a commercial plantation forestry project located in the "Green Triangle" forestry region, dispersed across several sites in South Australia near the Victorian border. The project areas are situated roughly 20km to 50km from the major regional hub of Mount Gambier, with specific plots located near Penola, Kalangadoo, and the Glenelg River near Nelson. Registered in September 2023, the project initially covered approximately 299 hectares, though a variation filed in May 2025 indicates the project area has been expanded.
This project operates under the 2022 Plantation Forestry methodology, specifically utilizing the "avoided conversion" activity type. This requires the proponent to demonstrate that the plantation land was at clear risk of being converted to non-forested use, such as grazing or cropping, following harvest. By registering the project, the proponent commits to re-establishing and maintaining the plantation for commercial wood production instead of switching to agriculture, thereby sequestering carbon in the timber and root systems that would otherwise be released.
The Green Triangle region is Australia's premier softwood timber belt, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The area typically receives high rainfall (600mm to 850mm annually), which is critical for supporting the rapid growth of Radiata Pine and Tasmanian Blue Gum. The soils in this vicinity are often sandy loams over clay or limestone-based "Terra Rossa" soils, which are highly prized for both forestry and premium viticulture.
The proponent, Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd (formerly Mitsui Bussan Woodchip Oceania), is a major player in the region's timber industry, specializing in woodchip processing and export to markets like Japan and China. The "GT" in the project name likely refers to the Green Triangle. This project highlights a growing trend where major timber companies utilize carbon finance to ensure the economic viability of restocking plantations in areas where high agricultural land prices might otherwise encourage conversion to farming.
