Cohen Carbon Project 1

Cohen Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located approximately 35km southwest of Bowen in the Whitsunday region of Queensland. Registered in April 2024, the project covers roughly 605 hectares of agricultural land. The region is predominantly characterized by beef cattle grazing, situated in the seasonally dry tropics where land use focuses on managing native and improved pastures for livestock production.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which rewards landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels. To achieve this, the project involves implementing new management activities such as altering stocking rates, changing grazing intensity, or improving soil nutrition. The goal is to encourage deep-rooted vegetation and ground cover, which sequesters carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

Environmentally, the site lies in a region with distinct wet and dry seasons, typically receiving between 800mm and 1000mm of rainfall annually, heavily concentrated in the summer months. The soils in this hinterland area are likely a mix of texture-contrast soils (Chromosols) and cracking clays (Vertosols), which are common in the Burdekin and Whitsunday grazing lands. These soil types generally have high potential for carbon sequestration when managed with regenerative grazing practices that minimize erosion and maximize biomass retention.

The project is managed by Agriprove, a prominent soil carbon project developer in Australia that acts as the service provider for the landholder. The "Cohen" in the project name likely refers to the landholding family or entity, a common naming convention for projects in the Agriprove portfolio.
