Erskine Park Landfill Gas Upgrade Project
ERF179686
Project Information:
The Erskine Park Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a waste sector project located at the Erskine Park Landfill, approximately 42km west of the Sydney central business district in New South Wales. Registered in March 2023, the project operates within an industrial and waste management precinct in Western Sydney, an area historically utilized for quarrying and logistics.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015. This specific "upgrade" classification indicates that the proponent, Enviroguard Pty Limited (a subsidiary of Cleanaway), has undertaken works to improve the efficiency of an existing gas collection system. By installing new wells or upgrading infrastructure, the project captures and combusts methane generated from both legacy (pre-2012) and non-legacy waste that would otherwise be vented into the atmosphere.
The environmental context of the Cumberland Plain region is characterized by temperate climatic conditions with moderate rainfall, typically averaging between 800mm and 900mm annually. The local soil profile consists largely of Wianamatta Shale derivatives, resulting in heavy clay soils that are often utilized in brick manufacturing, a relevant detail as captured landfill gas from this site is transported via a 4.7km pipeline to the nearby Austral Bricks plant to fire kilns, with excess gas destroyed via flaring.
