Myall Springs Project

Project Information:
Myall Springs Project is a soil carbon project located at Rangari, approximately 35km north-east of Gunnedah in north-western New South Wales. It was registered in June 2023 and covers a project area of 2,707.60 hectares.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). Soil carbon projects involve establishing baseline soil carbon levels through rigorous sampling, and then implementing eligible management activities to build soil carbon. Subsequent sampling or modelling is used to measure and prove the sequestration over time.
The Gunnedah region is traditionally known for sheep, cattle, and cropping operations. The local environment features a moderate mean annual rainfall of approximately 610mm, and the undulating native grass country is predominantly supported by clay soils.
To build soil carbon, the specific activities undertaken at Myall Springs involve altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.
The Myall Springs property has been in the Carter family for four generations. Proponents Matt Carter and Mel Carter run "Myall Springs Organic Beef & Lamb" and transitioned to chemical-free farming in 2006. They were awarded the Australian Livestock Producer of the Year in 2013, and their long-term focus on working with nature, rotational grazing, and regenerating native grasslands aligns perfectly with the goals of their carbon project.
