Rankin Carbon Project 7

Project Information:

Rankin Carbon Project 7 is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the Tatiara region of South Australia, approximately 13km east of Bordertown and just north of the small town of Wolseley. Registered on December 15, 2022, the project covers 172.65 hectares of agricultural land near the South Australian-Victorian border. The region is a significant agricultural hub known as the Tatiara, a phrase meaning "Good Country," and is characterized by mixed broadacre cropping and grazing operations, producing wheat, barley, canola, and livestock.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models). This method credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through changes in land management. Specific activities for this project include applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address nutrient deficiencies, shifting from intensive tillage to reduced or no-till practices, and retaining crop stubble. Additionally, the project integrates pasture rejuvenation and alterations to grazing intensity to promote vegetation cover and soil health.

Environmentally, the site sits within a transitional zone receiving moderate annual rainfall, typically between 450mm and 550mm. The local soil landscape features a mix of texture-contrast soils (Sodosols) and cracking clays (Vertosols), which are productive but can be susceptible to surface sealing or acidity if not carefully managed. By improving soil carbon, the project aims to enhance water retention and nutrient cycling, providing co-benefits for agricultural productivity alongside carbon abatement.
