Riversong Holdings Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Riversong Holdings Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, approximately 20km northwest of Manilla and 40km northeast of Gunnedah. Registered in January 2023, the project covers a substantial area of 1,922 hectares. The region is primarily defined by mixed grazing and cropping land use, situated within the Namoi River catchment.

The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology (Measurement and Models), which credits landholders for increasing soil organic carbon levels through improved management practices. Key activities for this project involve altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to enhance vegetation cover and soil health. This method requires a rigorous baseline measurement of soil carbon stocks followed by periodic re-sampling and modelling to quantify the sequestered carbon over time.

Environmentally, the site lies in a warm temperate zone with summer-dominant rainfall, averaging approximately 600mm to 650mm annually. The local landscape typically features Red and Brown Chromosols on the slopes, transitioning to deep, cracking clay Vertosols on the lower plains and river flats, soils that generally offer good potential for carbon sequestration when managed effectively. The project is supported by Carbon Link Operations, a major service provider in the Australian soil carbon market known for using advanced soil scanning technology.
