'Riversong Holdings Soil Carbon Project

Riversong Holdings Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, approximately 60km northwest of Tamworth and 20km west of Manilla. It was registered in January 2023 and covers 1,922.56 hectares.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Measurement and Models methodology involve modifying agricultural practices to build and store organic carbon in the soil. Standard requirements include establishing a baseline through rigorous soil sampling, adopting eligible new management activities, and utilizing a combination of ongoing direct sampling and modeling to verify carbon sequestration over the life of the project.

The region surrounding Manilla and Tamworth is a well-established agricultural hub known for extensive cattle and sheep grazing, as well as dryland cropping. The area typically experiences a sub-humid climate with moderate, summer-dominant rainfall. The local soils generally consist of fertile red-brown earths and self-mulching black clays (vertosols), which are highly suitable for carbon sequestration.

This project increases carbon in the agricultural soil system by actively altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing. These practice changes are specifically designed to promote greater soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health. The proponent, Riversong Trust, is working alongside Carbon Link Operations Pty Ltd, an established carbon aggregator that specializes in baseline soil measurements and grazing management.
